Mastro's Classic Steakhouse & Ocean Club Seafood

To make a striftopita, a cook spreads a savory or sweet filling onto thin dough, which is rolled into a loose log, then coaxed into a ruched spiral. The pie is usually baked — sometimes fried — for a crisp exterior that yields to tender filling. The crevices between rings allow fat to penetrate the dough, adding flavor and flakiness. And in sweet pies, those gaps provide a path for the pastry to evenly absorb the sugary syrup. There was a lot of handmade pasta in Los Angeles before Felix opened in Venice back in 2017, but a place fully committed to using just hand tools and rolling pins was fairly novel. Chef Evan Funke introduced this at his former restaurant Bucato in Culver City but mastered the entire restaurant package with Felix, earning it an Eater LA Restaurant of the Year award.

Events

Factory Kitchen remains a prime example of modern Italian in Los Angeles. Ori Menashe worked for years as the chef de cuisine of Angelini Osteria before opening this stunning and often cacophonous restaurant in the Arts District with his wife Genevieve Gergis. Menashe’s approach starts with classic, familiar Italian like nduja-studded mussels, wood-fired pizza, and handmade pasta. But nearly every dish draws on the umami-packed cuisines and cooking techniques he’s tasted across LA, like lobster squid ink spaghetti with serrano or grilled prawns with salsa roja, preserved lemon, and chile de arbol. The influences are subtle, and more often than not folks won’t realize it, but in the decade since opening Bestia’s flavor-first approach has become emblematic of modern LA cuisine.

I’m always down for a grilled cheese to go with my tomato soup, or a fried egg on toast to nestle next to a salad, but those are more accompaniments than main events. Headlining sandwiches — bánh mìs, Cubanos, cemitas, tuna crunches or egg salads — I tend to save for lunch. And then there’s the whole “is a hamburger a sandwich” question, which I will not be wading into today. Located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, Fogo LA is the perfect spot whether entertaining clients or a night out with friends.

Some people like to have a beer before they go to an event at L.A. Truffle fries, chicken nachos, sliders, onion rings -- all of those bar food favorites are in abundant supply, but Yard House's menu goes way beyond pub grub. Salads, Asian-influenced entrees, pizzas, pastas, and a hefty Gardein brand vegetarian/vegan menu, as well, ensures even the pickiest eaters will have something to cheer about. Queer food can be so many things, depending who’s cooking, eating or serving.

The clean, minuscule space is practically a take-out only operation, but that shatteringly crispy batter sheathing big-ol’ filets of chicken breast is the centerpiece of a sandwich worthy of a serious detour. Breva’s wonderful dining room isn’t all empty flash (but what a great bit of flash that would be, regardless). French and Belgian specialties like chicken vol-au-vent and carbonnade flamande are served in this bistro, named for the city of Antwerp, Belgium, from the chef Johan Halsberghe. For now, the menu is limited; they’re waiting for the gas to be turned on.

The menu sticks to highlighting fresh ingredients, like fennel and orange salad or Dungeness crab and mascarpone ravioli with cherry tomatoes. Come for the vibes, stay for the cocktails, and maybe share one of the best chicken parmesans in town. Dan Tana’s, which opened in 1964, has plenty of detractors for its celebrity-riddled booths and sometimes lackluster dishes. But fans interpret the old-school food as timeless Italian American food, with numerous plates named after the West Hollywood restaurant’s famous regulars. Stick to martinis and the chicken parm, and the rest will solve itself through the restaurant’s timeless conviviality.

Prices are approachable, even to the nicely curated beer and wine, which makes Sunday Gravy a true local favorite. While the pizza remains the main draw, what makes L’Antica worthy of repeat visits is the laid-back patio that feels like an escape from the bustle of LA. Arguably one of the restaurants in LA that put Korean BBQ on the L.A.

Elevate your pregame (literally) by heading up to WP24 by Wolfgang Puck, located on the 24th floor of the nearby Ritz-Carlton. This lofty eatery dishes out gourmet Chinese food along with five-star views of the sparkling LA skyline. Grab a cocktail (and those same views) at its in-house lounge, Nest. It might be tucked inside a sports arena, but LudoBird isn’t your average fried chicken stand. Helmed by local legend Ludo Lefebvre, this gourmet counter serves up all-star flavors. Hopefully you love carbs, because there are plenty stuffed inside honey lavender biscuits, brioche-encased “sweet and salty” ice cream sandwiches, and Ludo’s popular buttermilk Provençal chicken sandwiches.

The partners Gary Fishkop and the chef Paul Cacici, with their chef de cuisine, Jamie Tao, put a creative spin on Italian classics like vodka sauce with green tomatoes and a swordfish Milanese. The Cypriot chef Marilena Joannides has made it her mission to dispel the aura of difficulty that surrounds phyllo-making. Using just a stand mixer and a small hand-cranked pasta roller, she tries to show home cooks in her classes that making fresh phyllo is easier than they might imagine.

The mostly Millennial and Gen Z attendees considered food (pie, seaweed), food culture (potlucks, cookbooks) and food spaces (a co-op, clambakes) through queer, Marxist, feminist and anti-colonialist perspectives. An easier solution still, and evidence of striftopites’ popularity among Greeks, lies inside a vast expanse of display freezers at Mediterranean Foods, a Greek supermarket in Astoria, Queens. This West Midtown staple was known for its whole Korean fried rotisserie chicken, ramen bowls, and bento box lunches. It was a popular hang out spot for Georgia Tech students on trivia nights. It was even visited by chef and TV personality Guy Fieri for an episode of Diners, Drive-in, and Dives on Food Network in 2019.

We are just a short walk from LA Live and Staples Center and just steps from some of the city’s most prominent hotels. With a variety of differentiated menus for all dayparts including lunch, dinner, weekend brunch and group dining, plus full-service catering and contactless takeout and delivery options, guests can discover something new at every turn. Jackson Kalb’s follow up to this neighborhood El Segundo trattoria Jame was a further development of his love affair with Italian food. The former fine dining chef just wants to serve food he loves without pretension, which means a versatile Italian American menu of house-extruded pasta. Think spicy rigatoni alla vodka, linguine with colatura, and lemon tagliolini.

Funke and partner Janet Zuccarini have crafted a charming dinner destination, starting with a gorgeous pink chicory salad and the now-famous round of sfincione focaccia. Meander through tagliatelle al ragù bolognese, orechiette with sausage sugo, and foglie di ulivo (with rapini pesto) before sharing a tagliata di manzo, or grilled ribeye cap. New Yorkers might be surprised to see their neighborhood West Village cocktail bar turned into a glorious, airy Italian restaurant on the top floor of the luxe Maybourne hotel in Beverly Hills. But it works here, with plush royal blue banquettes, a patio overlooking the city and hillsides, and inventive Italian-inflected cocktails.

Zack Pollack’s cherished neighborhood trattoria Alimento successfully weaves a California mentality with Italian flavors and cooking techniques. The rowdy dining room boasts albacore crudo and chicken liver crostone to start, and then a radicchio Caesar salad dusted generously with parmesan cheese. Most people will split the pastas, like casarecce with tomato, basil, and burrata.

Over the last four years, the effort grew into what is now Hendersonville's Pig Fest — a two-day charity event with a concert, barbecue competition and a kids zone. When the pandemic hit, the Christmas for Kids fundraiser in Sumner County was in jeopardy. Frank Platt answered the call, coming out of retirement as an organizer for what used to be the Nashville barbecue festival, and together with the tight knit community he'd built around himself, they raised $50,000 for the program. Frank Platt, a staple in the Nashville barbecue community, died in Memphis Monday after he was shot four blocks from the home he grew up in, on the 3000 block of Coleman Road in the Raleigh community. “Queer food defies categorization, and that’s its beauty,” said Megan J. Elias, who organized the conference with Alex D. Ketchum, an assistant professor at the Institute for Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies at McGill University in Montreal.

It's the perfect place to unwind and take a break - meet old friends for happy hour, celebrate a special occasion, or gather your family for dinner. Behind Beverly Hills’s stoves are chef Mattia Agazzi, sous chef Vanessa Chiu, and pastry chef Tamara Rigo. While lunchtime features an a la carte menu, dinner is a prix fixe affair with two different menus to choose from starting at $195. Steve and Dina Samson crafted an industrial masterpiece in the Fashion District, a high-ceiling space with hanging lamps, an artful mural, and a gold-painted bar. Chef Steve Samson leans on food from Bologna, like tortellini and minestra del sacco (parmesan dumplings) in brodo poured from porcelain pots tableside — plus some of the finest handmade pasta in town.
