Beginning in 1791, he lived with his mistress, Dorothea Bland, an Irish actress. In 1818, William married Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meinigen, but they had no surviving children. When his older brother died in 1830, he succeeded him as King William IV. And, until King Charles III in 2022, he became the oldest person to assume the British throne at age 64.

After a British captain failed to convince Ghezo to abandon his role in the slave trade in 1850, the king gifted Bonetta to him as consolation. Upon the pair’s arrival in England, Victoria agreed to take the girl “under her protection,” paying for her education and looking out for her throughout her life, wrote historian Caroline Bressey in a 2005 journal article. Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and King George III were married for almost six decades. Following their arranged marriage, no Georgian royals were more devoted to one another, but theirs was a love story that turned into a tragedy. With most of Bridgerton being very fictional—from the characters to the string quartet arrangements of “Thank U, Next”—you probably wouldn’t be surprised to hear the whole thing was just made up with no historical basis.

Born on May 19, 1744, Charlotte was the youngest daughter of the Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, a territory in what is now northern Germany. When Charlotte was 17, the new king of England, 22-year-old George III, sought her hand in marriage. A century later, Queen Victoria agreed to serve as the godmother of Sarah Forbes Bonetta, a young girl born into a prominent Yoruba family. In the late 1840s, King Ghezo of Dahomey (most recently portrayed on the silver screen in The Woman King) defeated Bonetta’s tribe, killed her parents and enslaved her.

She suffered from dropsy, which causes swelling and organ failure, and was usually confined to her bedroom at Kew. The queen died on November 17 of that year, surrounded by four of her children. During the funeral procession to Windsor Castle, the cobblestone paths were lined with straw so that the ill George couldn’t hear anything.

Although Charlotte attempted to expand her social circle, Augusta challenged her every step of the way, even going as far as to replace Charlotte’s German ladies-in-waiting with English ladies of Augusta’s choosing. Charlotte arrived in England on September 7, 1761, and the next day, met her prospective groom for the first time. She and George were married that evening, just a few hours after meeting. When Charlotte was seventeen years old, she was sent from Germany to marry George III, five years her senior. George had ascended to the throne following the death of his father, George II, and was as yet unmarried.

Prince George Augustus Frederick was the first of fifteen children born to Queen Charlotte and King George. You might remember his birth scene on Queen Charlotte — Prince George arrived not long after his parents nuptials. Prince George married Maria Anne Fitzherbert in 1785, but the Crown did not recognize their marriage.

The sweet mother of the Bridgerton brood was 48 years old during the events of Bridgerton season two, so it stands to reason she is roughly the same age during the “present day” Bridgerton scenes. While she maintains friendships with Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury, she is a few years younger. The day was marked by errors and omissions; a delayed procession from Westminster Hall to the abbey was followed by a six-hour coronation service and then a banquet that finally ended at ten o'clock at night.

On Thursdays and Sundays, the king and queen received courtiers at Drawing Rooms, where they showed off their family. On one such occasion Charlotte dressed her infant sons in their robes of state and her little daughter in a Roman toga and had them host the Drawing Room instead.
